Baillie: C-Diff deaths show need to learn lessons

Responding to the reports of three deaths in Scotland from a new strain of the Clostridium Difficile, Scottish Labour’s Jackie Baillie MSP, said:

Jackie Baillie MSP 2“I am deeply concerned to learn of these deaths. It raises serious infection control questions and I am concerned that the name of the health board where this has taken place is being withheld.

“It is now more than three years since the C-Diff inquiry began and more than five years since the first C-Diff deaths. These new deaths make learning the lessons from that first lethal outbreak all the more important. I urge the SNP Government to ensure there are no further delays in bringing that inquiry to a close.

“With fewer nursing staff on the wards and hand hygiene rules not being followed even amongst medical staff, the challenge in keeping hospital infections down remains difficult. With new and virulent strains of superbugs appearing, we need to be vigilant.

“We need an open and honest discussion about how we can minimise these outbreaks and their impact. We urge the SNP to adopt our proposal for a properly resourced reference laboratory, to ensure we take a proactive approach to new infections, such as NDM1 ”
