HMRC action shows importance of national minimum wage

Commenting on HMRC action against companies accused of breaking the law by using interns to fill paid roles, Scottish Labour’s Ian Murray MP, Shadow Minister for Employment Relations, Consumer & Postal Affairs, said:

“It is outrageous that rogue companies have been breaking the law when using unpaid interns to fill paid vacancies and that is why today’s announcement is welcome. Credit must also be given to Intern Aware who have done much important work to make sure the voice of the unpaid and low paid is heard.

“However, this only serves to underline the importance of the National Minimum Wage and its enforcement. Today’s announcement comes only weeks after Jo Swinson signed off changes to the remit of the Low Pay Commission which risk undermining the minimum wage.  One week the UK Government is looking at cutting or freezing it, the next Ministers talk about strengthening it – the Prime Minister should be clear with millions of hard working people across the country that a minimum wage is the foundation of a good economy and will not be scrapped.  A One Nation economy relies on companies doing the right thing by their employees.”
