Scottish Labour members call for Corbyn to go

Over 200 250 300 Scottish Labour members, including councillors and senior activists, have written an open letter calling for Jeremy Corbyn to stand aside and supporting Ian Murray’s decision to resign from the shadow cabinet.

Writing in a personal capacity, the Scottish Labour members say that Jeremy Corbyn cannot provide the leadership needed to form a Labour government and further the interests of working people.

Full text of open letter from Scottish Labour Party members:

With the crisis engulfing the country in the wake of the vote to leave the European Union it is clear that we need an effective Labour opposition to hold this government to account and to, ultimately, be in government again. The Conservatives have taken this country to the brink and, now more than ever, we need a Labour government.

The Labour Party was formed to provide a voice for working people in Parliament and to form governments that can further the interests of the majority of working people. It is clear that Jeremy Corbyn cannot provide that leadership.

The Leader of the Labour Party must have the confidence of the MPs they lead in Parliament. With Tuesday’s vote of no confidence, it is clear that no longer exists. Nearly nine million people voted for the MPs that expressed no confidence in Jeremy Corbyn on Tuesday – their views should be respected and Jeremy Corbyn should stand aside. We hear time and time again from ordinary people up and down the country that they cannot see Jeremy Corbyn as Prime Minister.

Some have accused Ian Murray MP of self-interest. This is absurd. The only self-interest that can be levelled at him is that he wants to serve in a future Labour Government – something all our MPs should aspire to. Ian also works around the clock on behalf of our party in his constituency, Scotland and across the UK.

We need a credible, competent opposition, but Jeremy Corbyn is currently unable to fill all positions on his front bench. Jeremy Corbyn wants to captain a ship for which he has no crew. For the good of the party and, more importantly, the country, he must step aside.

Yours sincerely,

  1. I wholeheartedly agree that Jeremy Corbyn must resign as leader. Our Party, our country needs him to go.

    1. “Nearly nine million people voted for the MPs that expressed no confidence in Jeremy Corbyn on Tuesday – their views should be respected” ….Has anyone asked them? This is taking representative democracy a bit far!
      .

      1. Exactly

I bet the same 9 million wouldn’t give them the time of day after this.
I wonder why none of the MPs are telling us how their constituents feel? Did they bother to consult them before shoving their knives in?

        No of course not.

      2. None of those MPs bar one represents Scottish seats so how is that representative of Scottish Labour ?

        1. Erm…

All the signatories here are Scottish Labour members.

And to be fair, 100% of Scottish Labour MPs is pretty unassailable…

    2. We agree

      Michael Sheridan
      Mary Glen
      Andrew Glen
      Airdrie and Shotts CLP

  2. they are fundamentally wrong. It doesnt matter whether you support Corbyn,Watson or whoever, we changed the way we elect leaders and the party agreed to it. Part of OMOV is not just that the membership has full power over the selection of the leader, it also placed an obligation on the PLP to back he member’s decision. MPs dont have a veto, individuals point of view are no more important than any other member, we have one vote each.

There is a clear procedure, follow it or back down. Letters of support from either side, and all the games playing played, are damaging the party. Candidates should out their name forward, make their case as to why Corbyn should be replaced, and place their faith in the membership to decide.

    1. The rules of the party would have prevented Jeremy from being on the ballot if MPs had nominated with their beliefs. That rule is specifically designed to stop a candidate who cannot command support within the PLP. We failed to apply it effectively. So it’s a bit of a stretch to set things out as you have Jim.

Nonetheless, I do hope we have a compromise candidate soon, one which all sides of the party can unite around. It just can’t be the one who has already proved he’s unable to unite the party.

  3. If Corbyn is forced to resign by the right wing Blairite faction, and this obviously concerted campaign, then the Labour Party is dead. The infiltration of the Party will have finally done its job. Israel and the US will be free to do as it likes in the Middle East without criticism.
Maybe each one of the MPs that signed the vote of no confidence should put themselves up for reselection by their CLP?

    1. This is not a right wing faction. Lisa Nandy? Owen Smith? Angela Eagle? It’s simply dishonest to pretend this is anything but a broad cross-section of the party telling the leader he has failed and needs to go.

      1. Really? because all of those you’ve named supported the war in Iraq privatisation means testing voted for tuition fees and Trident renewal.

In what universe would these people be described as left wing?

  4. I completely agree, Corbyn must stand aside for the good of the party and the country.

Please add my name to the letter,

    James Clegg, Kirkcaldy CLP

    1. Couldn’t you get nominated by the Conservative party before you tried for Labour?

      1. Trolls are such a bore – That line is so 2014. The 2016 Manifestos showed that Labour is the only credible left-wing party in Scotland.

        1. Would that be the labour 2016 manifesto that wanted to increase the taxes of the working man.

How did that work out for you ?

  5. Agree completely with this letter and and want to add my name. Kate Watson, Glasgow Shettleston CLP

  6. I would subscribe to all this letter has to say. We will never be returned to govern with Jeremy at the helm and I don’t think much of the advice he is apparently being given by those around him. Sad times for the Labour Party and as Tom Watson said, “The Party is in peril” – we must pull the party back from the brink of disaster.

  7. Please add my name

    Susan Dalgety
    Midlothian North and Musselburgh CLP

  8. I agree with this letter as well. Corbyn is not the right man to take the party forward. Can you please add my name too? Thanks, Alex Foulkes, Edinburgh Western CLP

  9. I would like to add my name in Support of Ian Murray
John Rowan Edinburgh North and Leith

  10. What can be done?
Labour “names” nominated Corbyne to make the contest inclusive. He was elected by a landslide, in a re energised Party.
Since that election a cabal in the PLP have sought to undermine him. There is no doubt he cannot command the elected MP’s any more, so he must go.
There is to be an election with Angela Eagles. Corbyne could conceivably win through grass roots support. Labour is badly damaged by this.
If Corbyne carries the new election, it will be a vindication of democracy but Labour will be destroyed.

  11. Please add my name in support of Ian Murray

    David Arnot, Edinburgh South.

  12. Come on. There’s still lots of room on the HMS Blairight lifeboats.

  13. So Duncan tell us all. When Corbyn re-establishes his leadership of the Labour party and the Blairites are forced to split and form their own Red Tory party will you stay and become a rabid Corbynite or will you move with the Red Tories and rename your site Red Tory Hame?

I’m sure all your contributors would love to know.

  14. Please add my name. Anne Begg Abeedeen South & North Kincardine CLP

  15. Edinburgh Southern CLP is a members-led, campaigns-focused Constituency Labour Party, open to all who share Labour values.

The Labour Party is a democratic socialist party. It believes that by the strength of our common endeavour we achieve more than we achieve alone, so as to create for each of us the means to realise our true potential and for all of us a community in which power, wealth and opportunity are in the hands of the many, not the few, where the rights we enjoy reflect the duties we owe, and where we live together, freely, in a spirit of solidarity, tolerance and respect.

I take it Mr Ian Murray is acting on the instructions of his Constituency members(-led) as indicated above.
Or is he acting on his own.
    Cheers Will

    1. MPs are not delegates of the CLP, they are the elected representatives of their constituents.

Edinburgh Southern CLP has never issued instructions to Ian Murray or any other elected representative, and never would.

You seem to have a fundamental misunderstanding of the relationship between a local party and local elected representatives.

      1. Sir,You are correct,in fact i have little understanding of most things.

Edinburgh Southern Constituency Labour Party expresses full support for Ian Murray MP

Members of the Executive Committee of Edinburgh Southern Constituency Labour Party today expressed the local party’s full support for Edinburgh South MP Ian Murray.

Ian has been and continues to be a superb and popular local representative, and he enjoys the strong support of party members across South Edinburgh.

Ian has always put his constituents’ interests first, and has been a selfless and tireless advocate for Labour values and the people of this constituency. We appreciate and understand that his decision to resign from the Shadow Cabinet today was not taken lightly.

We agree with Ian that we need a Labour Party that can do what we have done in Edinburgh Southern for generations – appeal to a wide range of people so that we can be a credible government of the future.

On behalf of the CLP we are proud to express our full support for Ian today and in the future.

By the way why am i included in the Southern Constituency when i don’t live in your area,Mr Ian Murray isn’t my MP,I believe it’s Ms Joanna Cherry QC SNP.

        Yours Sincerely & Good Luck.

  16. You write that you “hope we have a compromise candidate soon” but If you really think things need to change then why isn’t your letter calling for a contest rather than trying to bully someone out of a job they were put into by an unprecedented number of votes? Why isn’t the first port of call the constitutional process by which leaders are confirmed or changed? Could it be that you don’t think you are in the majority, that you believe that Corbyn actually has the support of the majority of the members and you want to bypass that majority? How democratic is that?
You refer to Corbyn as if he was a failure yet events over the last 9 months hardly bear that out – record number of Labour Party members; every bye-election won, mostly with larger majorities and shares of the vote; UKIP votes won back by Labour in local council elections; large majority of Labour voters won to support for Remain; Tory Chancellor routinely shown to be a failure. In fact the only place you might say he’s had a failure is in Scotland, although if anyone thinks that the party lost in Scotland because of Corbyn then you only demonstrate just how out of touch you are with erstwhile Labour supporters.
All of this achieved despite, at best, the sullen resignation of the PLP and, at worst, a relentless drip, drip, drip of hysterical opposition and denunciation combined with outright bullying that shames us all.
