Statement from Kezia Dugdale

Speaking following a conversation with Nicola Sturgeon regarding the UK’s vote to leave the European Union, Scottish Labour Leader Kezia Dugdale said:

“This is a bad result for jobs and for the economy in Scotland and across the UK. The priority now should be to stabilise the economy, protect jobs and make sure that we don’t lose access to the European market.

It is right that the devolved governments of the UK will now play a key part in any discussions about our future relationship with the EU. It would not be right for any discussions to take place without representation for the devolved nations of the UK.

I spoke to Nicola Sturgeon this afternoon. We both have profound disagreements about the constitutional future of Scotland, but I stand ready to work with her in the best interests of the people of Scotland.

Now is the time for calm heads. Labour’s manifesto ruled out a second referendum in the lifetime of this Parliament – we won’t be changing our minds any time soon.

One thing we know for sure is that we know very little about what will happen next.

However, on the question of independence, many of the fundamental questions that were unresolved and unanswered in 2014, remain so. Not least the question of currency. What we don’t need today is more turmoil, more upheaval and more economic chaos.”

  1. A simple plea here.

Labour has shed almost all its power in Scotland. Scotland needs and wants to remain in EU and it is still in the gift of Labour to make this certain, by a simple declaration saying you will make this your goal. Unlike the statement above, it must be untainted by weak, disabling qualifications “we’re not supporting anything the SNP wants”.

Such a statement requires humilty and courage, but where else can you start now? Such a statement does not imply subserviance or even “the same platform” as SNP. But it will gladden the heart of many Scots, uniting many to common cause, and make our county’s way forward more certain. It will also save your party in Scotland.

  2. Come on Kezia. Do something positive for everyone in Scotland. Labour can’t get any more unpopular & this will have the odious Ruth Davidson isolated

  3. As Labour at Westminster commit political suicide in full view, so Kezia’s message to Scotland is—–
    “Jist dae whit yer telt”.

    That’ll fix it!
